about

Steve Layton (Seattle, USA):

On the morning of the 2nd of July 2019 I woke up to a message from my long-time, long-distance artist/musician friend Jude Cowan Montague (www.judecowanmontague.com). We've collaborated on a couple different albums over the years; this time out she wrote: "I'd like to do a new work together and a piece about our album we did together and do an article about us working together - Steve. What do you think?"... Well, I thought send them right along!

In short order, Jude sent along one long track containing five short instrumentals featuring the bare bones of a melody played on Minimoog (Welsh Minimoog, 1990s Alex Winter, 1 of 5/6 in the world) and a bassy/drummy pattern played on a Novation Circuit Groovebox.

I pulled those into Propellerheads Reason and starting with the first "song", both treated Jude's original sounds with some effects, and used various tools in Reason to derive new tracks from the original audio, which could then be given to completely different Reason instruments. I worked on each of Jude's originals in sequence, so there's kind of a progressive build-up in the way they are augmented and embellished.

Forty-eight hours later I finished the last of the five tracks. Both Jude and myself are happy with the still-spontaneous quality of the new mixes, rough and ready but immediate and fresh.

Jude Cowan Montague (London, England):

I was in a bad mood, I had wanted to play music all day but something kept getting in the way. Then a friend came round with some guitars for Matt to fix (my other half in Montague Armstrong). Then I decided to just get my head down and record some tracks for Steve like I'd promised. As I played I got in the zone and my bad mood went away. I thought of our previous album we had made and tried to get some continuity in my imagination. I love what Steve did with the tracks I sent him.
