about

Sound-In (known at first as ImprovFriday) began in 2010 as simply a weekly online gathering-place for musicians of every stripe to share recordings of their improvisations and compositions, usually stuff a bit outside the standard pop/rock/jazz boundaries.

Very early on, I began taking the recordings that appeared during these 48-hour "events", and laying them down together in a multitrack DAW. Sometimes I manipulated a track with various effects, but most often letting them simply play out on their own against one or more of the other musicians' tracks. Each musician's track was usually made with no knowledge or regard of what any of the others were making and offering, yet somehow the mere act of bringing them into the same "space" led to surprisingly coherent mixes. Creating intention from non-intention became the name of my game.

Beginning in March 2011 I began collecting these mash-up/mixes into albums, so they could be preserved and disseminated. It's now April 2022, and so far there are 45 such albums, with 606 tracks total.

But those 600+ tracks are by no means all there is. In fact, there are many, many more tracks that weren't collected at the time they were made. Not for any lesser quality, but rather simply that they didn't fit the flow of the album in that moment.

And so this 46th collection of 39 previously uncollected mash-ups, spanning the years from 2010 all the way to 2018.

I may be responsible for the end result of each mash/mix, but none of them would be possible without a myriad of creative musicians from across the continent and across the oceans, that week after week came by our site to share their playing, and share in the communal listening. Some flitted through for only one or two weeks, some have been contributing from the very first. But each played a vital part, added their own surprising, vital color and energy. I considering each of these musicians a friend, and I'm endlessly grateful for their giving me the opportunity to weave my own dreams out of theirs.
